Mission:  To enhance and safeguard the earned benefits of all American veterans who have served honorably and to improve the quality of life for them, their families and the communities where they live through leadership, advocacy and services.

Purpose: AMVETS stands as a strong and influential advocate for America's veterans on important issues such as employment and training, mandatory funding for government-provided health care and other benefits to which they are entitled.

AMVETS History

After WWII many returning troops used their GI Bill benefits to attend college.  Veterans on campus began forming veterans clubs, a place where they could go and share similar experiences and offer each other support after the war.   On July 23, 1947, President Truman signed Public Law 216 that granted a Congressional Charter to American Veterans of WWII.  The charter has been amended over the years to broaden membership eligibility and change the name to AMVETS (American Veterans.)
