American Legion Auxiliary Programs

American Legion Auxiliary members and volunteers step up to advance our mission of service to veterans, military and their families! Here are just a few of the programs the Auxiliary participates in each year.

Poppy Program

Inspired by the famous wartime poem "In Flanders Field" by Lt. Col. John McCrae, the tradition of handing out a memorial poppy can be traced back to a single individual.  In November of 1918, Ms. Moina Michael handed out poppies to businessmen, asking them to wear it as a tribute to the fallen of WWI.  Today poppies are handed out around Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  100% of all donations collected from poppy distribution are used to help veterans, active duty service members and their families.

Soldiers Wish

The mission of Soldier’s Wish is to identify unmet needs of veterans of military service regardless of branch or rank and identify or provide resources to meet those needs by providing needed support directly to the veteran service members and/or their families in order that such service members can lead normal and productive lives.  To be a recipient of a Soldier’s Wish, an individual must be an honorably discharged veteran, or currently serving as an active duty member of the Armed Services of the United States of America.  Granted wishes include: providing mobility chairs, covering the cost to repair vehicles, renovating homes to make them wheel chair accessible, and so much more!  To learn more about Soldier's Wish Click Here.

Girls State

The purpose of the Girls State program is to provide an outstanding, unique, and coveted educational opportunity for the young women of our nation that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government through the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation citizenship training programs.  Each program is state-run and thus unique to the state in which it is held.  Cutting-edge political topics ensure that the debates are relevant, lively and passionate. Fierce political campaigns are held to elect a Girls State governor, party officials, and pass legislation.  Girls also have the opportunity to meet with some of their own state representatives and senators, who are genuinely interested in the fresh ideas of these future leaders.
